“Shen-Jing- Meaningful meetings"
Looking in depth into theory and acupuncture point that treat psychological and autoimmune disease
Shen and Jing meet in conception separate in death; therefore if we look deeply at these meeting we can understand life.
Acupuncture can affect life by going all the way to depth of Jing and Shen.
Introduction:
From every patient we can learn about his special story this is the inner tale of his Jing and Shen. Jing holds the patient's unique ancestral makeup and the Shen holding his deep inspiration. The very root of man is at the conception the meeting of heaven and earth. This Chinese medical concept is the core of understanding of human life. Life starts at the meeting of Jing and Shen and ends when they separate. The true mystery of life is in their interaction. In order to see how this apply in clinical practice we have to deeply look at these meaningful meetings when time (earth, Jing) meets the timeless (heaven, Shen).
These meaningful meetings are seen as the transformation Jing and the development of wisdom. The true meaning of clinical practice is not merely to treat disease, but to further inner growth and healing. In order to apply this concept clinically we need to get a closer look at these meetings on different levels.
Meaningful meetings:
The first meaningful meeting starts at conception, the last meeting is just before separation at death. Than during life we see this dynamic interaction in few stages: during fetal life, birth, every 7-8 years and the gates of life.
1. Conception and death(pure Jing and Shen):
The first meeting and the last departure. Conception and death. The spark of Shen and the material Jing. Pure Jing the most yin substance meets the most yang substance the Shen. This interaction is the foundation of understanding life and creation. Separation of yin and yang Jing and Shen means death. This is the level of begging and ending.
Acupuncture and clinical application:
This level can clinically shed light on fertility and the meaning of ancestral energy. As we will see later it can point out the strength and weakness that may arise during the gates of life especially as hereditary disease and tendencies. Disease especially autoimmune type that were hidden on the Jing level will emerge. For example a Multiple sclerosis(MS) patient will get disturbances in his vision when he is 28 years old (7x4) and later muscle weakness at the age of 35 (7x5). Many psychiatric disorders can emerge around those gates.
In acupuncture we will use points on the CV – conception vessels, GV- governing vessel as well as points on the heart and kidney meridians.
Here lays the essence of sex the deep attraction of water and fire.
2 . fetal life and birth ( Hun, Po):
Po:
During fetal life from the moment of conception Po is “entering and exiting” the Jing (Ling Shu 8). Therefore all the embryo physical development and sensations are based on this meeting of Po and Jing.
Acupuncture and clinical application:
Po relates to the lung and to Skin, anus (gate of Po), sensation and borders (boundaries). —Symptoms that may arise: weakness during pregnancy, eczema, asthma, itchiness Lack of control over sphincters and late control over urination, defecation, hereditary or deformity of the body. If one of the 7 parts of Po is not complete, it can cause mental retardation.
In acupuncture we will use points on the lung such as Lu-3 "Palace of haven" which Calms the PO and can also treat asthma ,as well as, sadness and depression.
Hun:
At or around birth Hun enters and is “Coming and going” following the Shen. It effects the mental movement.
Acupuncture and clinical application:
If these movements are impaired, it can cause symptoms such as autism, ADD, ADHD etc.
Po is following the Jing and Hun follows the Shen. The Hun provides movement to the mind, the Po provides movement to Essences, in all the physiological process of the body.
Once again they will depart in death when the Po will follow the bones (Jing) to the earth and the Hun will rise with the Shen to heaven. Death separates them again.
This level marks the human achievements on earth. This is the dynamic of life and death on a very deep level of human life.
3. life gates:
We develop and grow through the meaningful meetings of Jing and Shen in life. Events (gates) - which occur every 7-8 years such as pregnancy and changes in physical and the emotional spiritual levels-
Changes in the kidney Jing-marrow- bones on the physical level. The physical changes grow and decline, while on the emotional and mind level, the meeting of Jing –Zhi-will (Kidneys) with the Shen-inspiration-love (heart), creates the transformation. The transformation of fear and memories (time) to wisdom, which is timeless. Ling Shu, chapter 8, which is called "Ben Shen", the root of the spirit, unfolds this human potential to gain wisdom through the transformation of the Jing. This is why Fire and Water are the fundamental axis for mental balance.
The dynamic here is of transformation the Jing that moves up along the kidney meridian to the point on the chest, close to the heart and Shen. Their names: Spirit Seal, ShenFeng-Kid 23; Spirit Ruin, LingXu-Kid 24; Spirit Storehouse, ShenCng-Kid 25; indicate their effect on the Shen. The name and location also explains the transformation of Jing into Shen. These points can treat the disturbed Shen from deep seated fears. Many breathing and heart problems as well as depression can be due to such disturbances.
Treatment which includes the 8 extra meridians treats problems relating to hormonal changes, sexual problems, maturation, growth and development, are used to treat this level.
Summary
The understanding of Jing and Shen enable Chinese medicine to diagnose and treat effectively many complex physical and mental diseases. The meaningful meeting of fire and water unfolds life.
This lecture will take a deep look at the unseen mystery that is underling physical and mental growth, as well as, explain the different treatments that effect these changes.
Picture:
People with strong Shen can overcome some of the deformities in the Jing. From the pictures at the back of the book "Living to Tell the Tale" of Gabriel Garcia Marquez as a child and adult, we can see the transformation from fear in childhood to wisdom in later life. The meaningful meetings of Jing and Shen.
